Serengeti National Park
Serengeti means “endless plains” in the Maasai language.
The Serengeti National Park stretches from Kenya’s southern border with Tanzania to Ngorongoro in the south and onto Lake Victoria in the West. This 14,763 square kms of a World Heritage site varies from the great rolling plains of the South East interrupted by rock out-crops, to dense bush and forest ranges. Several rivers cross the park, and it is studded with lakes and swamps. Within this vast area, roam freely the greatest and most spectacular concentration of wildlife anywhere in the world. The principal inhabitants are Wildebeest, Zebra, Thompsons and Grants gazelle, Eland, Hartebeest, Impala, Buffalo and Giraffe. The Serengeti is famous for a large number of black manned lions, and prides of up to 20 roam together at any one time. Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena and Jackal are also present in large numbers, and over 500 bird species. The Great Migration, which is the annual movement of Zebras and Wildebeest in May or June from the central plains to the permanent water of the Western Corridor, and their return in November and December remain one of the most remarkable and inspiring sights of Africa.
